Asbestos Removal
When needing asbestos removal, it is strongly advised to engage a reliable and qualified removal contractor.
Materials categorized as ‘lower risk’ or non-licensed include materials such as cement, textured coatings, bituminous products, floor tiles etc. Although it is not mandatory to have a licensed contractor remove such materials, it is highly recommended to have them removed by a competent or trained individual.
Licensed asbestos removals must adhere to a mandatory two-week notification period to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and must be carried out by a licensed and accredited contractor, as required by law. The materials that fall under the category of licensed asbestos-containing materials include:
- AIB (Asbestos Insulating Board)
- Asbestos Millboard
- Sprayed asbestos coatings
- Thermal lagging found on pipes and boilers
- Loose fill insulation
- Fine dust and debris from asbestos-containing materials
Removal is not always obligatory, and if the asbestos-containing material is in good condition, management is a viable option. However, in cases where the material is deteriorating or prone to disturbance during routine activities or planned works, removal is likely the most suitable choice.
